Flooring materials come in a wide range of colors, materials, textures and sizes. Once you decide on a material, you will need to determine exactly how much material will be needed to complete your project.
The first step is measuring the area for your new stone flooring.
As an example, let's say you have a room that measures 10' x 10' x 8' x 8'.
To arrive at the square footage of your room you will need to multiply each of the lengths of the room by each of the widths. You would therefore multiply 10'x 10' x 8' x 8' for a total of 6,400. Since a square foot measures 144 inches, you would divide the 6,400 by 144 and arrive at a total of 44.44 square feet of material needed.
The second step is to determine the actual number of stone tiles you will require for your project. To do this, you need to know the size of the material you will be using. For example, if you decide on a 16" x 16" floor tile, you need to first determine how many tiles it will take to cover 1 square foot of space. To determine that, you simply multiply 16" x 16" for a total of 256. You once again divide the total by 144 and arrive at a total coverage area of 1.78 square feet per piece. With these two pieces of information, you can now determine your exact flooring needs. Your room totals 44.44 square feet. Since 1- 16" x 16" tile covers 1.78 square foot, you divide 44.44 by 1.78 and determine that you will need 24.96 pieces. Naturally, you would round upward to 25 pieces to cover the floor. You should plan on purchasing additional pieces as there will always be a waste factor of approximately 15% to 20% due to corners, cutting and breakage.
